Chief Data Science Officer to Teach Online Courses in New Master’s Degree Program at UC San Diego

UC San Diego is launching its first online graduate degree program this fall to help meet the demand for data scientists as companies across all sectors seek to leverage vast amounts of data into meaningful insights. Applications for the new Master of Data Science Online program are now open and San Diego Supercomputer Center’s (SDSC) Ilkay Altintas will be teaching two of the courses: Python for Data Science and Capstone Project in Data Science.

Altintas is the Chief Data Science Officer (CDSO) at SDSC and a Founding Faculty Fellow of Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute (HDSI). She has played an integral role in the stewardship of HDSI cyberinfrastructure (CI) resources and services.

She continues to work with UC San Diego faculty, industry partners and students at all levels. In addition to her CDSO responsibilities at SDSC, Altintas is a research scientist and director of the Workflows for Data Science (WoRDS) Center of Excellence and the WIFIRE Lab at SDSC. The WoRDS Center specializes in the development of methods, cyberinfrastructure solution architectures, and workflows for computational data science and its translation to practical applications. The WIFIRE Lab focuses on methods for all-hazards knowledge from data collection to modeling efforts, and has achieved significant success in helping to manage wildfires in California.

“I’m excited to be teaching along with our esteemed data science and computer science and engineering faculty members in this unique program to prepare working professionals from many backgrounds for a future career in data science,” said Altintas.
